Vortex Hunting Ranger Finder Review

Having a great range finder can assist you in taking your hunting and shooting game to the next level.  With the use of one, you can get a reading on the exact distance of your target and use that knowledge to adjust your weapon appropriately to hit your target on the first shot – without ever letting your subject know you are there.
Finding the best range finder for hunting and other pursuits, such as golfing, can be a daunting task.  You want to make sure you are getting the most bang for your buck.
That’s where the Vortex Optics Ranger 1000 comes in.  I compared this one to a Leica rangefinder and a Leupold range finder. I couldn’t have been happier with my choice.  I chose this model because I wanted a dependable range finder that would be on the less expensive side; but also had the functions I needed it for and did what it was made to do every time.

The Design of The Vortex Optics Ranger Finder

One of my favorite design elements of this range finder for hunting would be that it is built for its purpose and doesn’t have all the extra frills and gadgets that could cause a malfunction at the last moment.  Nothing is worse than getting ready for a day of hunting only to have your equipment fail.

Not only is it built for its purpose, it’s design and precision functionality are signs of superior engineering.

The Reticle

The red reticle in this hunting rangefinder is perfect for low light conditions.  Having the reticle makes it much more functional for use at different times of the day or different weather conditions.  Not only that, but you can adjust the brightness of the reticle to make it easier to see in these all conditions.

The Waterproof

I was curious about the ability to use this model of rangefinder in the rain, as I know some of us like to continue our hunting even if a light rain comes through.  While I haven’t had a chance to try it out in the rain, I went through and checked some range finder reviews for the Vortex Optics Ranger 1000, and was happy to see a lot of fellow hunters were more than satisfied with its ability to stay water-tight, so there is no fogging issue.  Many of them said that the red reticle we talked about earlier came in handy during these situations with its ability to adjust the brightness.

HCD Mode

If you are on the market for an archery range finder, this will fit the bill.  If you switch the mode to HCD, it compensates the angle for you when using your bow – taking the guess work out and making everything go smoothly, so you don’t have to take wasted time to work out the adjustments yourself.

Distance Settings

The settings on this model can be changed from both yards to meters, depending on your preference.  I like this function because I can make it fit into how I prefer to make my calculations.

Tripod Mount

There is a tripod mount on the bottom of the unit, so if you use a tripod when bow hunting with a range finder, this comes in handy.

The Slip Resistant

The rubber texture of the outer armor keeps it from slipping out of your hand if you are dealing with damp conditions or your hands get sweaty while you are tracking.  It also helps with damage control if you drop it, not that you have to worry about it if you do drop it because of the extended warranty from the manufacturer!

The Comfortable

The compact design of this hunting range finder blows me away.  A lot of range finders are big and bulky.  Let’s face it; we don’t want to have to carry a lot of extra heavy gear with us.  Coming in at 8 ounces, and a compact 7″ long, finding a suitable place to store your rangefinder is never an issue.

Anti-Reflective

Lenses on this unit are anti-reflective, and they have a crystal clear view.  We all know that is exactly what you are looking for in any range finder scope!

Accessories

While you won’t be getting many great accessories with the Vortex Optics Ranger, you don’t need a lot in the first place since it comes with everything you need.  You will receive a soft case that has a nylon loop for running a belt through, which makes it easier to carry around with you.
It also comes with the first battery, but you’ll probably want to go ahead and stock up, so you always have spares on you.  A CR2 battery is what’s used, just for reference.

The Warranty

Generally, with almost any product, you get a limited warranty.  That is not the case here.  Vortex Optics stands by their product so much that you get an unconditional warranty!  According to them, if you run it over and destroy it, mail the pieces in they will send you a new one.  I’m sorry, but you can’t beat a warranty like that.

Some Things to Consider

While the yard range on this model goes up to 1000 yards, your consistency will vary in your ability and target. There is no option on the Vortex Optics Ranger 1000 that gives you directional bearing.

Overall

I am hard pressed to choose a different hunting range finder for archery, target shooting, range shooting, or distance shooting.  Compared to the competition it comes in at a low price while still delivering on its functionality.  It gets the job done without a lot of extras that I don’t need; while at the same time offering the distance I want.  To be honest, I was sold when I read about the warranty you get with the Optics Ranger 1000.  It’s a win, win in my book.
