Suppose you and your family are on your very first camping trip. You’ve picked the perfect location — a local state park — where the rangers swear there are not any large, furry things that come through the campsite at night looking for food. You’ve bought everything you need: tents, sleeping bags, cookware to use on the campfire, bug spray and yes, the necessary flashlight.
It’s your first night there. You’ve pitched the tents, cooked hot dogs over the campfire, the kids are finally asleep in their tent and you and your wife are asleep as well.
Suddenly, in the middle of the night, violent shaking awakens you. You open your eyes to see your wife—bug-eyed and terrified—as she informs you there is a bear outside the tent. You remind her the rangers assured them there were no bears in the area. She insists the rangers are wrong because she is positive she heard a bear rifling through their food.
So you inwardly sigh, get up and put your jeans back on and reach for the flashlight. You press the end button to turn it on and nothing happens. You press it again and nothing happens. You know you pressed the right button and you know that you put batteries in it. In fact, it worked when you tested it. But it doesn’t work now. It doesn’t even emit a flicker of light.

- Cree has developed specially made microchips that are power efficient and extremely bright. With these chips installed, 230 lumens, a common standard of brightness in flashlights, is the equivalent of six standard flashlights. Imagine how bright a flashlight with 847 lumens would be.
- The VG10 can be hand held or mounted onto a firearm. When mounted onto a weapon, the flashlight gives low light to help see and identify targets.
- It is magnetized. My husband loves it because he can place it on the car and angle it towards the part of the car on which he is working. The ThorFire VG10 never moves and the light is bright enough for him to see even when it’s dark outside.
- The ThorFire VG10 is equipped with four levels of brightness: moonlight, low, mid and high – from 0.5 LM at moonlight getting up to 847 LM on high beam. LM stands for ‘lumens,’ which isthe measure of the total amount of light coming from a lamp or other light source and is visible to the human eye. One lumens is equivalent to one candle flame.
- The ThorFire VG10 is considered an EDC because of its’ size. It is approximately 5.28 in length, 1 inch in body diameter and the head is 1.28 inches in diameter. This size makes it easy to slip into a pants or shirt pocket for the guys and into a small purse for women.
- I like the flashlight and keep it in my purse at all times. On nights when I’ve been out and arrive home to realize that there is no light on to guide me to the door and help me see to unlock the door, I just grab my ThorFire VG10 and I can see everything I need to see.
- The ThorFire flashlight is equipped with a switch that allows the user to turn the flashlight on without making a sound. The flashlight remains on for only a few seconds, however, it is sufficient time for the user to determine his or her location, which is very useful for law enforcement when they are searching for suspects in the middle of the night or for families when camping in remote locations.
- My husband uses the flashlight to see how to work in small places. The light is so bright, it lights up the entire area where he is working. He also puts the flashlight to good use when working on our cars. The flashlight case is magnetized, which allows him to lay the flashlight on the metal portion of the car, point it in the direction he will be working, and again, he can easily see where he will be working.
The ThorFire VG10 is not without its disadvantages.
- A major disadvantage is that the VG10 does not come with a battery. Cree recommends that the user purchase a ThorFire premium battery. In most standard flashlights, standard batteries are acceptable. However, it is best to follow the manufacturer’s recommendation.
- It is not equipped with a method to carry the flashlight.
- It needs a belt or pocket clip, and a strap all of which could be used for easier storage while not in use.
- The ThorFire VG10 did not have any method of assisting in contacting help, if needed. A flashing strobe could be added that would be used to attract attention if the user were in trouble.
- Another safety feature missing is a way to use the Morse SOS Code. The on/off switch could be programmed to use for Morse SOS Code, again if the user needed help. These additions would certainly make the ThorFire VG10 more useful.
Cree has made an excellent, EDC flashlight that is suitable for almost anything the user needs. It is obvious that The ThorFire VG10 is a top-of-the-line tactical flashlight and would be the best investment for your money.
