Hunting at night can be a lot of fun and a great challenge, especially with the right equipment and gear. It can also be an important part of making sure certain animal populations are being properly maintained, especially in areas where other animal population control methods have forced animals to change their behavior and become increasingly nocturnal. If you’re looking to try hunting at night, one of the most important pieces of equipment that you’ll need to ensure a successful night out is the Predator H30 Flashlight so that you’re able to see the animal that you’re shooting at without being spotted.
Beam distance and Light output
The Orion Predator H30 Hunting Light is a mounted hunting light that emits a bright, focused beam of light that can reach up to 273 yards in distance. Capable of reaching brightness of up to 300 lumens, you can choose between a red or green LED light depending on the type of game that you’re hunting. If you’re primarily after game animals such as foxes, coyotes or other varmints, red is a great option as these animals are unable to perceive red light, whereas the green option is perfect for hunting wild hogs. Either option allows you to see your prey well before they see you.
Having the choice between red and green is also nice, as although red is harder for certain animals to distinguish (and therefore more stealthy), it’s also much more difficult for humans to see as well. In situations when green light will do just fine, this is a slightly easier option for you. If you need or want the added flexibility, you can always purchase both and be able to switch back and forth based on your needs at the time.
There are 4 brightness settings on the light, with a battery that lasts anywhere from 4 to 120 hours depending on your setting choices. It’s made of a tough, anodized aluminum, a strong, scratch resistant, aviation-grade material. It weighs in at just under 5 ounces, and is 6.1 inches in length, so it really won’t add that much bulk or weight to your rifle.
Impact, Water Resistance and Military Grade
The Predator H30 hunting light is a sturdy instrument that is built military grade. The H30 is also completely waterproof, and can stand being immersed for up to 30 minutes at a depth of up to 6 feet and has an IPX-8 rating. For power, the H30 relies on either two CR123A, two RCR123, or one 18650 batteries, all of which are rechargeable.
If you’re in the market for a new light to help you with all of your night hunting needs, this is a pretty solid option and will do exactly what you need it to do with very few exceptions.
On the plus side, this is an extremely sturdy light, and you’d be hard pressed to be in a situation where this instrument wouldn’t stand up to whatever you’re throwing at it. In addition to falling or water damage, this particular hunting light is also capable of performing in sub zero temperatures as well as very high temperatures. For a lot of reasons, it’s probably not a great idea to throw the light into a fire, but rest assured this thing would make it out without a scratch if you did! Although, hopefully you’ll need it, there is a ten year warranty in case anything breaks or goes wrong.
One potential downside is that there is no way to manually refocus the beam, so you’re relying on the manufacturer to ensure that everything is properly calibrated. In order to turn the device on and off, there is a pressure switch option available, but it’s surprisingly not great considering how strong the light’s other features are, and you can just as easily leave the light on and still be pretty undetectable to most animals.
Although the beam can reach distances up 273 yards, in most cases the distance that you’ll actually be able to illuminate clearly may be slightly shorter than that. The optimal viewing distance to see the body outline of a wild pig is around a range of 150 yards. The full distance of the beam will probably be much better for spotting eyes at a distance. If you are looking for a little more distance for your night hunting light, Orion has a longer distance light, the M30C 377 LED Hunting Light, that reaches a little bit further with the trade off of having significantly more bulk. The M30C can reach about 700 lumens (as compared to the H30’s maximum of about 300) and also has the option of red or green to best suit your needs.
The biggest potential unknown is whether the light will fit securely on your individual weapon. There is the option of purchasing a set of mounting kits for a variety of different options, but you may have to do some tinkering to make it work, and it’s something you might not be aware of until after the light has been purchased and arrives at your house.
This is one of the best options available to you if you’re looking for a stealthy, secure and nearly indestructible light for any of your night hunting needs. After checking local laws and regulations around night hunting in your area to make sure it can be done safely, legally, and ethically this light will be a great addition to your equipment to make sure you have a blast and shoot what you intend to when you’re out in the wilderness.
