The Sanuk Fraid Not ST flip-flops provide hours of much-needed comfort underfoot and are our top overall pick. For a budget pick, we like the Freewaters Ci-Friday Channel Islands flip-flops, which include full arch support, molded cushioning, and a spongy rebound while being the lightest flip-flop in the brand’s line.
Beautifully simple by design and as laid back as sipping a sundowner in the tropics, the flip-flop remains the quintessential hot-weather piece of footwear. Even the most basic models offer the easy slip-on-and-go convenience loved by travelers. Still, the best ones also amp the details to provide more cushioning and contoured footbeds to combat foot fatigue, high-end upper fabrics like leather and cloth to avoid chafing, and smartly engineered outsoles to provide grip on wet, slick surfaces and sure traction on uneven terrain.
In evaluating each pair, the fit and feel ranked paramount, focusing on models with anatomical footbeds that provide arch support, flip-flops that really layer in lots of midsole cushioning for day-long comfort, and reliable outsoles for a sure grip. We considered the longevity of the materials to help justify the higher price points that some models carry. Also prioritized were activity-specific designs for hiking, recovery, navigating water; and handling high arches or wide feet; and the baseline aesthetics.
These are the best men’s flip-flops of 2022.

For hours-long comfort, the Fraid Not St is hard to beat, with a modest outsole to provide grip on slick surfaces and just the right touch of laid-back styling. Thanks to a boost of extra-cushy, high-rebound Soft Top Foam placed between the suede footbed and the jute/rubber outsoles, the Sanuk Fraid Not ST flip-flops provide hours of much-needed comfort underfoot. The hemp-blend straps are lined with a fuzzy blanket textile to avoid hot spots and boost the cushy feel, and the canvas lining wicks sweat. And they also come with an excellent eco story, from the responsibly sourced suede to the eco-conscious outsole materials and the use of hemp.

Inspired by pro surfer Mick Fanning, the Fanning flip-flop from Reef comes with wide synthetic nubuck upper straps so that it can more easily distribute the pressure points across the upper foot and accommodate those with wider-than-average feet. Comfort comes from a compression-molded EVA footbed, a padded jersey liner, and the brand’s “360-degree” heel airbag. Underfoot, a robust herringbone-pattern rubber sole grips confidently, and—bonus—there’s a bottle opener integrated into the footbed.

Crafted with premium full-grain leather, the OluKai ‘Ilikai proves that a simple pair of flip-flops can be a head-turner. Designed with a softly curved line that mirrors the calm ocean surface, the sandal features kapa-inspired chevron artwork that makes it stand out from lesser leather flip-flops, and the “in-board” construction style lets the straps slide into the footbed platform for a more secure fit and a cleaner, sharper overall aesthetic. An anatomical, lightweight PU footbed provides ample support and cushioning, and the brand’s nonmarking Wet Grip Rubber outsole comes with a podded texture to handle slippery, wet, uneven terrain. Considering buying the ‘Ilikai as an investment may help justify the price, and the sandals are crafted to last for years.

When Hoka dropped its first pair of running shoes, it ushered in the still-going-strong trend for footwear with maxed-out layers of cushioning, so it’s only natural to extend that approach to the ORA Recovery Flip. Built to be a welcome reward for finishing a long run, it boasts an oversized midsole with a soft top layer of EVA for immediate comfort. A jersey textile strap wicks moisture, while an early-stage Meta-Rocker and a 6-millimeter heel-to-toe drop offer a touch of forward momentum and a smooth ride. What to Look for in Men’s Flip-Flops
For such a simple piece of footwear, the materials used in flip-flops can run the gamut from rubber, EVA, and proprietary foam to leather and fabric. Some are crafted of the same material throughout. In contrast, others employ a mix of materials (synthetic or organic fabric uppers, microcloth-lined straps, soft foam midsoles, and stiff rubber outsoles with aggressive tread underfoot). Basic all-rubber or all-foam flip-flops keep things relatively simple, while leather reigns at the high end, both in price and performance; the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) says that “leather minimizes the potential for blisters and other types of irritation.” Fabric also makes for a less-expensive option, affording a clean, soft feel against the skin, though they tend to dry slower than those made entirely of rubber or foam.

Most higher-end flip-flops geared toward travel or other uses will have a solid slip-in feel and use chafe-resistant materials in the uppers and padded midsoles to fight foot fatigue and deliver a bit of bounce back. Those with anatomical footbeds up the comfort level considerably and typically include more arch support. And flip-flops designed to handle uneven terrain will also add a rugged rubber outsole (or sections of hard rubber to not inhibit flex), which helps protect the feet from sharp rocks or unforgiving terrain.
Flip-flops were born out of a necessity for a simple-to-wear footwear solution for hot climates, and all deliver. But some brands have integrated additional features that make them environment- or activity-specific. For basic travel and beach-going needs, you want ones that fit well, can handle water without impacting performance, dry quickly, and provide a sure grip on wet, slick surfaces. For all-day usage, choose flip-flops with anatomical footbeds and more cushioning to avoid foot fatigue. And for more specific activities like hiking or navigating uneven terrain, up the cushioning with flip-flops that come with wider straps for better foot control, more padded/foam layers in the midsole, and aggressive treads in the outsole.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I care for and wash flip-flops?
Almost every pair of flip-flops can handle exposure to moisture, but the overall care and cleaning methods for each pair largely depend on the materials. All rubber (or rubber and EVA, or other foam materials) can be wholly soaked without impact and can likely be cleaned in a washing machine when needed—just use cold water and a gentle detergent.
Fabric uppers may also go in a machine but check with the manufacturer prior. For more expensive materials like leather, use a hand-applied cleaning solution that caters to leather, so you don’t damage the material.
Are flip-flops bad for your feet?
It might be easier to say that certain flip-flops can be bad for your feet, especially if you have raised arches, flat feet, or suffer from plantar fasciitis. Avoid inexpensive models with a thin, flat (read: not contoured) footbed, which don’t provide additional support and have nominal cushioning. The APMA suggests you “bend the flip-flop from end to end, ensuring that it bends at the ball of the foot. Shoes of any kind should never fold in half.”
They also suggest that you ensure there’s no irritation between the skin of your toes and the toe bar, which “can lead to blisters and possible infection.” They also suggest not wearing them for walking long distances and not playing sports in flip-flops, which “can lead to twisting of the foot or ankle, as well as sprains and breaks.”
Instead, look for flip-flops with anatomical footbeds, contoured arch support, ample layers of EVA or some other shock-absorbing foam, and robust outsoles designed to grip wet, slippery surfaces.
Why Trust TripSavvy
Nathan Borchelt has been rating, testing, and reviewing outdoor and travel products for decades, and has spent many years wearing all types of flip-flops while traveling, beach-combing, scuba diving, paddle boarding, and lounging around at poolside bars. Fit ranked paramount and included such considerations as materials designed to avoid hot spots or blisters, the overall foot control provided by the uppers, the rate of cushion and rebound in the midsole, and the level of grip provided by the outsole, especially on wet, slick surfaces typical to most environments where flip-flops are worn.
Do men still wear flip-flops?
Today, probably the most popular sandals are flip-flops. In the US, they didn’t really become popular until the 1960s but these days, you can see men wearing them all over the place

The 18 Flip-Flops You'll Want to Buy This Summer – Esquire
18 Flip-Flops You’ll Want to Buy This Summer, Even If You Swore You’d Never Buy Flip-Flops Courtesy Flip-flops get a bad rap—even from us, as it happens. But like so many things that once seemed verboten and now feel kinda fine to wear wherever—lookin’ at you, Crocs and sweatpants—flip-flops don’t really deserve all the flack that’s been thrown their way over the years. Does the idea of wearing a pair on a crowded subway car or out to dinner with the in-laws still conjure deep feelings of dread from the very core of one’s being? Sure does! But long gone are the days when any of us, even the most ardent anti-flopper, should expend any serious energy railing against the humble flip-flop. Here’s the thing: Flip-flops do a job, and they do it well. They keep the bottoms of your feet covered when you’re loping across the hot sand on the way to that perfect spot down the beach where you can lay out a towel and relax in front of the waves. They shield your soles from scorching cement as you shuffle from the pool to the poolside bar. And, sure, they will also keep you from making direct foot-to-sidewalk contact should you choose to wear them on your morning coffee run, a move that we here at Esquire will neither endorse nor rebuke. Plus, it’s worth noting that they make pretty decent house shoes. The world has come around, flip-flop haters. Maybe it’s time for you to do the same (or just get another pair of sandals). And if you’ve always been pro flip-flop? Well, just do your best not to gloat, then pick up a pair or two from the list below. The more the merrier. Best flip flops for men 2022: Havaianas to Gucci | British GQ
Best flip flops for men 2022: Havaianas to GucciThe flip-flop is a style of footwear that needs no introduction… mainly because you can hear it coming from several streets away. This onomatopoeic shoe sits in a category all of its own and is a testament to human engineering: our victory in getting as little material to cling to a foot as possible.Along with sandals, espadrilles and loafers, the flip-flop is a mainstay of holiday footwear. Nothing says summer holidays like a split toe (except, maybe, the smell of cheap plastic pool floats and cockroaches). A flip-flop is the promise of beaches, pools, swimming and a cracking tan. Less of a shoe, more of a lifestyle choice. Now, it is possible to do the flip-flop badly, such as buying a pair for a euro from a beachside stall with no thought, or God-forbid, wearing a pair to the office or on a New Bond Street shopping spree. Not only will you be setting yourself up for a nasty blister, but when it comes to durability, the flip-flop is no military boot, and will likely start to fall apart. Here to help you source the best flip-flop for your holiday wardrobe, we’ve put together an edit of the best styles available for the summer ahead, from hot pink Havaianas to refined Brioni leather. For more fashion, grooming and technology releases delivered straight to your inbox, sign up for our GQ Recommends newsletter.

Not only is it luscious to wear, but it held up well despite our rigorous testing due to being constructed with heavy-duty materials. Rather than breaking down after several months of wear, the Hokua conformed to our foot and kept looking good through it all. With enough grip to keep you solidly on your feet and plenty of style, you can’t go wrong. The Hokua is certainly not inexpensive. It’s also not the most expensive, but it might be a stretch for some to imagine forking out the big bucks for casual footwear. Additionally, the use of dense and durable materials make this one of the heaviest flip flops we tested. That said, if you’re looking for a stellar combination of comfort, support, and traction without sacrificing style, this shoe is more than worth its price tag. It comes as somewhat of a surprise that the classic and wildly popular Rainbow Premier Leather flip flops snag this award, but after some hair-splitting and some serious time at the beach, we feel they are deserving of our accolades. These flops feature great feeling (and looking) leather footbeds and soft leather straps that only feel better as they break in and mold to your feet. They’re plenty versatile and can handle fun days on the water as well as warm summer evenings out on the town. These don’t have the best traction, so they aren’t a good option for pushing your limits in flip flops by going on steep hikes or rock hopping adventures. They also aren’t the most supportive, as the footbed breaks down and molds to your feet (comfy for some, but not for everyone). If you need more arch support, there are better options for you highlighted in this review. But, if you want a flip flop that looks great, won’t fall apart, and won’t break the bank, the Rainbow Premier Leather is a solid choice. 18 Best Flip-flops for Men (2022) That are Comfortable in Summer All should be fair when it comes to love, marriage and shoes! We’ve written about the best flip-flops and beach sandals for women. Now it’s only right that we cover the best flip-flops for men. (And, guys, we’re sticking to just men’s flip-flops here, no sandals, as we know that’s what you’re looking for in this post. See our post on the best travel sandals for men and women if you want sandals.) Now in case you’re wondering, George (the male half behind this blog) has given his manly seal of approval to the following recommendations. For many men (especially George), the most important factor when choosing flip-flops is how comfortable they are. Walking around in a pair of flip-flops that pinch or don’t cushion your feet makes for a long day! So as we combed through all the many options, comfort was a top priority on our list. Yep! This post is all about the most comfortable flip-flops for men. Where do we find all these different styles of flip-flops? Amazon of course! Most comfortable men’s flip-flops? Check the construction When hunting for the good summer footwear, you’ll find that different flip-flops are made of different materials. Cheap flip-flops are fashioned from inexpensive rubber or plastic. They break down quickly – and you’ll end up tossing them in the garbage sooner than you’d like. Better quality flip-flops are made from natural products like cork or leather, as well as high-performance synthetic materials. They offer good anatomical arch support, often through an EVA footbed.
