Intex knows inflatables. The company produces many different types of air-filled products: pools, pool toys, mattresses, and a wide assortment of other inflatable equipment to enjoy and stow away. Intex inflatable kayaks fit nicely into this theme; they get you out on the water at a low price, and are portable and packable when not in use.
Intex kayaks are affordable inflatable kayaks for the casual paddler. These low-cost kayak packages come with nearly everything needed to get on the water: pump, paddles and the boat itself. All you need is a Personal Flotation Device (PFD) and the required safety gear, and you’re ready to go. They’re also widely available from big box department stores, outdoor stores or online.
Available as solo or tandem boats, Intex inflatables are best used as casual recreational kayaks. These are not heavy-duty, expedition-ready touring kayaks, but rather are best suited to an afternoon at the beach, cottage or campground, and short paddles on sheltered lakes, bays and slow-moving rivers.
Intex inflatable kayaks are stable, and with their open decks, are comfortable and easy to enter and exit—making them ideal for beginner paddlers. Intex kayaks’ inflatable design adds to the comfort of the kayak; it’s like sitting on an air mattress. They can also be quickly deflated to make storing and transporting easier.
Intex kayaks are ideal for paddlers or families who want a low-cost option to spend some time on the water. While they are not as durable as high-end inflatable kayaks, they still hold air for casual paddlers on a budget. For aspiring recreational kayak owners, Intex inflatables offer comparable price and performance to an entry-level rigid kayak, but with the added benefit of effortless storage and portability.
Overall, these kayaks are a great choice for occasional paddlers who are tight on space and want a kayak they can stuff in a closet or storage shed.

Shopping for a used Intex kayak?
If you’re buying a used Intex kayak, carefully weigh the potential benefits and drawbacks. Choosing to buy used can save you some money, but consider that since these budget-priced inflatable kayaks aren’t exactly known for durability, your purchase may not last as long as you’d hoped.
Cost savings are the main reason to buy used, or if you feel that you’re among the most casual of casual kayakers. Intex inflatables are perfect for a float around a calm lake, and if you only hope to take the boat out a few times a season, why not get the cheapest one you can?
All Intex kayaks are inflatable, so it is imperative that you ensure the kayak actually inflates and holds air before you purchase it. Start by examining the overall condition of the Intex kayak. Open up the package and inflate it. In the process, listen for air leaks in the valves and tubes and watch for any stains and mold, which may reveal the kayak was stored wet.
Is there any fading in the Intex kayak’s deck (top) or hull (bottom)? Fading reveals UV damage, which will compromise durability. Make sure there are no missing parts; check for seat(s) and seat back(s), deck rigging such as grab lines, skeg (a removable fin that slides into the hull) and pump.
If you discover the kayak has an air leak, it may not be a deal-breaker. If the leak is a simple pinhole, you can repair the hole using the patch kit provided, or any PVC patch kit. Leaks along the seams of the kayak or at the valves will be more difficult to resolve; pass on any leaking used kayak that you’re not confident about repairing.

Intex kayak buying advice
Intex kayaks are available across North America at box stores and online outlets. These inexpensive inflatable kayaks are a good choice if you’re low on storage space and looking for a casual kayak for recreational paddling on calm, sheltered water without breaking the bank. Intex kayaks are available for a range of needs, including recreational paddling and fishing, single and tandem, for paddlers of all sizes.
There are three main models of Intex kayaks, with two models available as a solo or tandem kayak. Each design is slightly different to match different activities. The Explorer and Challenger models are found within Intex’s budget-minded “Sport” series, while the higher-priced Excursion falls within the brand’s more feature-rich “Professional” series.
Here’s a rundown of all the models to help you identify the best match for your paddling style and ambitions.
The Explorer K2 kayak is the least expensive two-person kayak from Intex. Available as a tandem model (that can also be paddled solo), the kayak kit comes with a pump and paddles, so in theory you can buy a personal flotation device (PFD) and safety kit (containing Coast Guard-approved equipment), walk out of the store and get on the water.
Still, it’s important to remember that Intex’s background is making pool toys and air mattresses. Their inflatable kayaks are built in the same vein, especially the cheaper Explorer. This kayak is perfect for an hour of gentle fun on a sheltered bay or lazy river, but it is not one you want to rely on in any sort of rough waters.
Know The Local Hazards
- Check navigation charts before you launch.
- Check with those who have local knowledge of man-made and natural hazards, e.g. low-head dams; sweepers, strainers and undercuts; tides and currents; and rocks and shoals.
The Challenger K1 and K2 kayaks are comparable in performance and price to the Explorer, with slightly more covered decks. The Challenger K1 is a single-person, lightweight inflatable kayak, while the main difference between the Challenger K2 and the Explorer K2 is that the Challenger features less rocker (or lift in the bow and stern) and is a foot longer, making it slightly quicker and roomier for two adult paddlers. The Challenger K2 can also be paddled solo by a larger paddler.
Intex’s Excursion Pro K1 and K2 kayaks are the best built kayaks produced by the company. These single and tandem kayaks are made from better quality PVC materials than the Explorer or Challenger series kayaks. More robust materials allow for a higher air pressure, which keeps the kayak shape stiffer, increasing speed and performance.
With angler-specific features like rod holders and gear mounts, the Excursion Pros are also suited to casual kayak fishing. All this does add a bit of weight, but at 37 and 46 pounds for the K1 and K2, respectively, these kayaks are not ridiculous to carry either. Transporting the kayak is also easier with the included carry bag—something other Intex kayaks do not come with.
At double the price of the Explorer and Challenger series kayaks, the Excursion Pro kayaks offer an attractive middle ground in terms of performance, price and durability between those budget boats and higher-end inflatable kayaks made by Advanced Elements or Sea Eagle.
Use this as a start, and remember that online research will only get you so far. The best advice we can offer is to always test paddle before buying any boat. Of course, that’s a challenge at most of the big box and online outlets where Intex kayaks are sold. Try to borrow an Intex kayak from a friend for a test paddle in real-world conditions. The more time you can spend on the water in a similar style of kayak, the better the purchasing decision you will make.
Wear A Life Jacket
- Everyone, even strong swimmers, needs to wear a life jacket at all times when on the water. It is extremely difficult to put a life jacket on once you fall into the water. Even a light wind can blow any paddlecraft away from you, faster than you can swim.
- Buy (and wear) a comfortable Type 3 or S life jacket specifically designed for paddlesports.
Here are answers to some of the most common online questions about Intex kayaks.
Intex kayak warranty
Intex kayaks come with a 90-day limited warranty. Submitting warranty claims requires Proof of Purchase (your receipt) and should be done through Intex, rather than the place you bought the kayak from.
Cheapest Intex kayak
The cheapest Intex kayak is the Challenger K1 Kayak. This kayak retails for around $170 US. It’s a 9-foot solo inflatable, made with vinyl. The package includes aluminum paddle, pump and a removable skeg (fin that attaches to the hull) to assist with directional control.
Where to buy Intex kayak
Intex kayaks are available in-store and online at many big-box retailers like Walmart, Cabela’s, Bass Pro and Canadian Tire, as well as from Amazon. The inexpensive Explorer kayaks are the most widely available, but many stores can also order in other Intex kayaks.
Intex vs Sevylor inflatable kayak
Both Intex and Sevylor produce similar discount-priced inflatable kayaks for casual paddlers. The two brands cater to similar demographics: namely, beginners looking for a cheap kayak that they can store in a closet and transport in their trunk, without the need of investing in a pricey roof rack.
On the whole, Sevylor has a broader range of inflatable kayaks than Intex—especially if you’re looking for a unique two- or three-person kayak. However, Sevylor’s North American sales are limited—Amazon is your best bet, but be aware that online returns or support may be more difficult. If you want a greater selection of inflatable kayaks, you will benefit from Intex’s broader network of North American distributors.
Both brands offer similar performance characteristics and both are meant for use in sheltered, calm water and on gentle rivers with class II whitewater or less.
Sea Eagle vs Intex kayak
Sea Eagle produces some of the highest quality inflatable kayaks on the market. They utilize drop-stitching to keep the walls rigid, and use robust PVC to resist abrasion and impact. These upper-tier kayaks cost much more than Intex boats, but their lifetime is significantly longer.
Intex’s “Pro” series Excursion models are comparable to Sea Eagle’s Sport Kayak series. The SE330 and SE370 are only slightly more expensive than Intex kayaks, but magnitudes better. If you feel like spending the extra hundred dollars, opt for a Sea Eagle and get a boat that will actually paddle like a kayak.
Carry A Whistle (And A Light For Night Use)
- Every paddler should have a whistle attached to his/her life jacket.
- Carry a light at night. Consider carrying a distress signal device.

Intex Explorer K2 – Review 2022 – DIVEIN
Intex Explorer K2 The Intex Explorer K2 Kayak is one of the most popular inflatable tandem models on the market. It doesn’t cost very much, yet it offers a potentially fun recreational kayak experience. But don’t expect it to replace a proper kayak for paddling effectively over distance. But the Explorer K2 package is portable, easy to use and includes everything you need to set up your kayak. It provides you with a safe level of stability and maneuverability for experiencing recreational kayaking. In short, the Intex Explorer K2 kayak is a fantastic choice for someone who is just getting into kayaking and looking for something to get them out paddling. It’s also great for families who are looking for an affordable recreational kayak that can be used by every member of the family. Our Overall Review Reasons to buy: Lightweight and portable Good value for money Converts from single to tandem Ideal for 2 person recreational kayaking Great way to introduce kids to basic kayaking Reasons NOT to buy: Where to buy: Review DIVEIN.com Score: 3.8/5 Construction: 3.5/5 Stability: 3.5/5 Maneuverability: 4/5 Portability: 4/5 Price/Quality: 4/5 The Intex Explorer K2 kayak is a 2 person inflatable kayak for use on flat water. Featuring a 3 chamber design, this kayak offers a strong level of buoyancy and a suitable amount of stability for kayakers. The kayak can be inflated in less than 10 minutes using the high-output pump provided by Intex in this package. To inflate the board make sure you follow the instructions by inflating each chamber numerically. You can use the indicated 10cm line to make sure that the Explorer kayak is adequately inflated, although we recommend you inflate slightly above the limit for maximum buoyancy. Having too much pressure in the chamber can damage the chamber or run the risk of blowing it whereas having too little pressure will provide a lack of buoyancy. The Intex Explorer K2 is easy to use and fun for kayaking around lakes or any flat body of water. The bright yellow color makes it easy to spot in the water for both you and potential hazards such as boats. The removable skeg provides little in terms of tracking, however it does allow for a suitable level of directional stability while paddling. The inflatable seats and backrests are not supportive and it will begin to get uncomfortable if you’re using them for too long. Overall, the Intex Explorer K2 provides you with a great way to experience the water with friends and family while not having to worry about lugging around a massive kayak. The main features that stand out are how lightweight and compact the design is and how easy the inflatable kayak is to assemble. Intex Explorer K2 Kayak Review 2022 – Two-Person Inflatable KayakThe name Intex Explorer K2 Kayak has become really popular in the last few years. Intex is a name that almost anyone can trust because they offer the widest range of inflatable boats. Especially, when it comes to fulfilling your leisure time needs, you need a kayak that will provide you the support and stability you need when on water.ImageIntex Explorer K2NameIntex Explorer K2 Kayak, 2-Person Inflatable Kayak Set with Aluminum Oars and High Output Air PumpIntex Explorer K2ImageNameIntex Explorer K2 Kayak, 2-Person Inflatable Kayak Set with Aluminum Oars and High Output Air PumpThat can only come from Intex where you won’t have to spend thousands of dollars yet you will be able to get an amazing yak that will last you for a long time. This yak comes with all the essential features you need to have a good time on and off the water. Whether you’re a kid or an adult, a beginner or an expert, a saver or a spender, the Intex Explorer K2 comes with everything you have been looking for. In this article, we are going to provide you with all the details you need to know before making your purchase.Length – 10.25 ftWidth – 36 inchesWeight – 30.60 lbsMax Weight capacity – 400 lbsBasic Information! The Explorer K2 Kayak is an affordable, two-person kayak. The best thing about this yak is that it comes with all the additional accessories you will need to put it on water. You won’t have to make any extra purchases, maybe a gas tank for your own feasibility but other than that, it is really easy to set up and you can get it going as soon as you make it hit the water. The overall construction of the boat is from premium vinyl which is highly resistant to all kinds of punctures. Along with that, the boat features two air chambers that will keep the yak afloat even if one of the chambers hits a bump. You will have enough time on your hands to get the boat to safety and get off of it.Overall ConstructionIt is manufactured out of premium quality vinyl that makes both of its chambers highly resistant to various kinds of punctures and keeps the yak from ripping apart. The reason why Intex used vinyl is that it is rust and corrosion resistant, highly durable and rigid, very strong, and is also capable of resisting moisture. As far as the quality of the material is concerned, we won’t say it is very strong but it does the job well so we don’t have to worry about that. We tested it for quite some time however, we should tell you that do not expect it to function solidly after a few months. Once you start using it regularly, as time will pass, the boat will be more prone to punctures.Highly StableSince the Explorer K2 comes at a very affordable price point, we really did not think that it will do well but it did and that left us shocked. The yak is extremely stable, especially on calm water but it also does the job on flowing water. This is mainly because of its large width. It keeps the yak from wobbling and provides utmost stability to the user so he can easily stand on it and enjoy his time. However, we will not suggest that you take this yak on surfing water. It won’t be able to withstand strong waves because of its weight and you will probably be risking your life. The maneuverability is also very easy. You…

Intex Explorer K2 Kayak Review: Is It Worth It?
Intex Explorer K2 Kayak Review: Is It Worth It? — Uprooted Traveler Thinking about buying an Intex Explorer K2 kayak? You’re not alone- it’s one of the most popular entry-level inflatable tandem kayaks on the market, thanks to its affordable price point. After years of considering and researching it, my husband, Justin, and I purchased it last year and have used it several times, on everything from lakes and rivers to even ocean waters. If you, too, are considering making this purchase, keep on reading for our review of the Intex Explorer K2 kayak. This post may contain affiliate links. If you make a purchase through them, we may receive a small commission, for which we are extremely grateful, at no extra cost to you.Pros & Cons of the Intex Explorer K2 KayakIf you want a more robust review, keep on reading below, but if you just want the highlights, here’s our takeaway after a year with the Intex Explorer K2 kayak:Pros:AffordableComes with everything you need (i.e., carrying case, kayak, pump, seats, double blade paddles, and patches)On the lighter end of the weight spectrum for tandem inflatable kayak CompactEasy to assemble, disassemble, and transportMultiple air chamber design is safer, in case one is punctured during useThoughtfully designed (e.g., carry handles for easy transport and removable skeg for better directional stability)Versatility (can be used as either a 1- or 2-person kayak) CONS:Material is less durable than more expensive inflatable kayaksLack of storage spaceSeats can be a bit uncomfortable after prolonged useSlower than a hard shell kayak and is only suitable for flat water kayaking Specifications of the Intex Explorer K2 KayakNumber of people: 2Max capacity: 400 lbs.Pack size: 10’3″ X 3′ X 1’8″Weight: 30.6 lbs. For years, Justin and I would hike to some epic alpine lake or drive past a sparkling turquoise body of water in a national park, look at each other, and say “If only we had a kayak.” Given our more limited budget and also that we wanted the ability to take the kayak on hikes, an inflatable kayak made a lot more sense for us than a hard shell. And, after researching several brands within our price point, we made the leap to purchase the Intex Explorer K2 kayak. We were, like, REAL excited the day our Explorer K2 arrived. One of my favorite things about this kayak is that, out of the box, you get basically everything you need to get out on the water, other than life jackets (which are legally required to have in most states). Some reviewers have said negative things about the paddles, complaining that they’re wobbly or too short, causing water to drip into the kayak. I frankly haven’t experienced either of these issues, but, if the paddles bother you, you can easily upgrade to a better one, like this one. And even with that extra purchase, the Explorer K2 will still be a more economical option than most other inflatable kayaks on the market. When setting up the kayak, you’ll need to inflate several different air chambers (two sides, one ground, one stern [the back], and one bow [the front])- I love this design aspect as it makes it safer (i.e., one chamber could pop and you should still be able to get to land safely in most situations). Set-up is generally easy and fast (usually, you can be all set to go in 10 minutes or less!)- the valves are easy to handle and there’s a measuring strip to help you confirm you have the right air pressure. The only annoying thing is using the manual pump (it’s just tedious, more than anything), but you could easily upgrade to a rechargeable electric air pump.
